HILLCREST SCHOOL NEWS - Our ELAC parents ROCK!
Hillcrest Elementary held its first ELAC meeting of the school year on Thursday, September 20, 2018 lead by Dr. Guerra, school principal. Our parents participated in a training that helped them understand the purpose of ELAC, completed a Needs Assessment, reviewed our School Plan and parent input was solicited. We specifically reviewed GOAL 1 in detail and discussed how our school has committed to ensure that our students are developing the 4C’s (creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking skills) across the curriculum in order to prepare them as 21st Century learners. The various strategies that are included in our plan and that our staff have committed to implement include, but are not limited to: Full implementation of our newly adopted English Language Arts materials (Benchmark Advance), Code To The Future, Thinking Maps and Write From the Beginning and Beyond. Our DELAC representative shared information from the recent DELAC meeting. In addition, our ELD Interventionist, Ms. Luna, informed parents of her role in supporting our English Learners at Hillcrest. She explained that a third of her time would be spent providing intervention and support to long-term English Learners in 5th and 6th grades, a third of her time would be spent providing direct support to teachers through lesson planning, lesson modeling and support using resources to assist our English Learners and third of her time would be spent in addressing compliance issues. Also, upcoming dates for English Language Parent Workshops were provided. Our two Coordinators were available to translate and support as well! Our next meeting is scheduled for October 11, 2018 at 8:45 am in Room 11.
