Kindergarten & 1st grade Chinese New Year Cultural Event
Hillcrest Elementary’s Dual Language Kindergarten and First grade teachers coordinated a Chinese New Year Cultural Event in our cafeteria for all students in Kindergarten and First grades today to expose their five (see, hear, feel, touch, taste) senses to the beauty of the Chinese culture.
Students rotated through six stations where they made: 1) Dumplings; 2) sweet red bean mochi; 3) Chinese Lanterns; 4) Chinese calligraphy; 5) Read stories; 6) Fun with chopsticks.
Our parent volunteers helped to steam our dumplings and mochi as well as assisted at each of the stations. Our parents also donated the funds so that our teachers could purchase the necessary items for this fun cultural event.
We also had Monterey Park Mayor Hans Liang and his wife attend this event and tour our school. They saw all of our hard working and dedicated staff members working their every day magic with our students. Our visitors were pleased with the learning and instruction in each of our classrooms and were excited to see: Our EL Interventionist preparing our newcomers for the upcoming ELPAC assessment, our 5th/6th graders in Ms. Park’s class collaborating in groups to code their EV3 robots; our music teachers (VAPA) reviewing musical notes and teaching students how to play songs on their recorders in various classrooms.
They were quite pleased to see how well-behaved and kind our students behave. We took the opportunity to take a picture with our Be the “I” in KIND banner in support of The Kindness Challenge that begins next week and they promised to visit again soon!
We invite you to our upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year celebration on Thursday, January 30th, 2020 at 9 a.m. in our upper grade blacktop.
Happy Lunar New Year to all!
(Remember, no school tomorrow!)
